International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Mirabal opposed the dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo in the Dominican Republic and were involved in clandestine activities against his regime. The sisters called themselves “Las Mariposas” (“The Butterflies”). The three sisters were assassinated on 25 November 1960. The assassination turned the Mirabal sisters into symbols of both popular and feminist resistance. In their honor, the United Nations designated this day as International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. https://w.wiki/4Qos |
