Mist

Part 22: The stars knew not where their stations were

I have no idea where we land, the hills are unfamiliar. Hreidmar looks at me, the green eyes glisten. He raises his head towards the stars, his song shakes the trees. A crack appears on the rock wall.
"Follow me." He presses his long body through a narrow opening.
We disappear in a winding cave. I see a faint green-gold light at the other end. As we come closer, I have to bite my lips, so I don't scream with despair. Fafni's tiny body, in a ring of elderflowers. Fireflies zoom around the blossoms. I unwrap his little head, place it beside his neck, where it was severed. The fireflies zoom around the wound. I fall to my knees, can't hold back anymore. I curse Sigurd with the most terrible oath I can recall, in the ancient tongue. Hreidmar looks at me.
"You still remember."
I dry my face, hands trembling. Then I curse all who aided Sigurd, with the same oath. Hreidmar hisses.
"Mist. Take it back. Or else your heart will break."
"I'm not done, Hreidmar." The third and last oath I curse upon myself, lest I leave Fafni unrevenged.
Hreidmar looks at me.
"I wish you didn't do that. Because it will change you forever."
"Tell me what you know, Mon-tey."
Hreidmar sighs.
"Sigurd killed my son, because he had no other way to get the One he craves. Do you know who put him up to it? Who demanded the life of a dragon?"
"Bryn's father, that pompous old fool."
Hreidmar shakes his head.
"Brynhild herself. Queen in the making."
I gasp.
"You... you must be mistaken."
His green eyes look into mine. His gaze is soft.
"Have you thought about who put the curse on Swan? Or how Sigurd knew where Fafni was? How he knew that he can safely cross the flame in a maiden's armor?"
My heart contracts. I stare into the darkness, unable to speak. Let it seep into my empty heart.
Bryn. Sister. You will die by my hand.
I feel the full weight of the curse coming down on me.
"May the love of Earth Mother be witheld from you from now on. May you find no rest upon her in your life, may She find no rest upon you in your death. May she lay heavy on you to the end of times."
