Bryn wanted this power. Her heart is poisoned by pride and greed. She thought Fafni's blood would give her all she wants. To be the queen of Budle's tribe. And Regin's. To start with." I feel the blood drain from my face. "She wanted Reginleif gone? She was her cousin by blood." "Swan was her sister by blood." Atle looks at me, his eyes sadder than I've ever seen them. "You've seen her." My scream echoes in the cave. Hreidmar puts his forehead to mine. "She will be entombed in my son's cave. And Sigurd will free her. But they will never be together. You will see to it, my child." I sigh. "I marked Gunnar for her." "Perfect. Gunnar will marry her then." Hreidmar turns his head upwards. Sings. And I understand every word now. He sings forth Bryn's death. "She will die by her own hand, heart forlorn, until my fire purifies her. Brynhild's soul will serve me until the End of Days." |
