Part 35: Insight

Somebody kisses me awake.
"Maker?"
"Let's go with Twelve. For now."
I look around. Enigma is asleep, no sign of Eleven.
"Where is...?"
"Let's go with Maker. For now." Mischievous twinkle in Twelve's eyes. "She has business to conduct."
"What business?"
"I didn't ask. Anyhow, I just wanted you to know that I need to go out for a while. I'm not sure when I'll be back"
"Right."
"Will you be here when I come back?" Her eyes look sad. As if she expects a no.
"I think so. Yes. And thank you for last night . It was quite something."
"Awesome fucking."
"I was thinking of the conversation."
She takes me into her arms.
"I love you, Lelo."
One soft kiss, then she's gone. I nestle closer to Enigma. He turns around, hugs me. I let his delicious warmth seep into me.
"I'm always here for you, sweetie."
"Or your evil twin?" I wink. He bursts out laughing.
"I don't pretend to understand the situation. But I kinda love them both."
"Twelve said you'd love just about anyone."
"Not anyone."
His mouth skims mine, I feel pleasure spreading in me. Am I really in love with Enigma? Is Twelve right about that?
"Do you love me?"
He looks surprised.
"Twelve thinks I'm in love with you."
"Are you?"
"I kinda love you."
He doesn't say anything, just holds me. I feel his heart beating. Lift my head, look into his beautiful eyes. They remain open while he kisses me. He sighs.
"I hope Twelve is right."
"Why? I thought it's her you love. And Eleven."
Enigma nods.
"Doesn't change how I feel about you."
I feel a twinge of happiness. Then a twinge of fright.
Enigma.
I've never seen that coming.
And the new insight from deep inside. I won't be running.
Not this time.
