Mist

Part 21: The Moon knew not what might was his

"You have one chance to come out of this alive." My dagger on his throat, the tip gently pushing on the skin, making him sweat with fear. I feel it on his scent.
"Where is the head of Fafni?"
Sigurd looks away. I nick his neck with the blade twice, shaping an X.
"You are marked with the Gift rune. It's up to you who you will be given to, warrior. Truth or dare?"
The blue eyes shine with anger. I smile at him. This makes him insecure. So does the screech of Hreidmar, closing in. Sigurd looks helpless, with his neck under my knee. Soft move of my hand, stroking his cheek, taunting.
"I never liked you, Mist." His eyes are defiant, despite of the terror he feels.
"Do you like to be alive? You are running out of options."
Sigurd clenches his jaw. I hit him without warning.
"Maybe just as well. I wanted to bury the head, make Hreidmar go easy on you. Obviously you imagine you can take a dragon." I see his hand creep closer to a stone on the ground. I laugh out loud.
"Truth is, you couldn't even take a girl. The gods know you tried, you weak little creep."
He grits his teeth, averting his eyes. His hand is just inches away from the stone.
"Touch that piece of rock and I will put my own mark on your forehead."
I place my hand on his shoulder, giving it a little squeeze. Almost friendly. Then cut him. Mark him with the F rune, for Fafni. Usually the F rune signals wealth. Not tonight, though.

Hreidmar is very close now, I feel the hot metallic smell on the breeze. He will find us any minute. I am out of time. Sigurd panics, grabs the rock, lifts it above his head, ready to strike. I hit him on the base of his nose. He goes out like a light, his fingers unclench, releasing the stone. It falls on his head. Takes only a minute to strip him naked, secure his hands with his own belt. I tie him to a tree with my belt. Look around, tracing the smell. I spot Sigurd's packing in the shrubs. Open it. Push my fist into my mouth, bite into it. The golden eyes are still open, looking at me as he often did when he was alive, with wonder and surprise. I find a piece of white cloth, roll it out. Take a deep breath, pick up Fafni's head. Smaller than my own. I can't help but cry out as I touch him, so cold. I place the head on the cloth, kissing his cold forehead, just above the short snout. The scales are still soft. I try to wipe it clean of his blood, gods only know why. As if it made any difference. The tiny fangs glisten in the moonlight. Baby teeth. I wipe the tears from my face, try to shut his eyes, knowing it's hopeless.
"Leave them open."
Hreidmar. I was too blinded by grief, haven't even heard him land.
I bow my head.
"Mon-tey."
"No need to call me that anymore, Mist. I am no longer your teacher." His voice is so gentle. As I look up, I see his bright green eyes glisten. Gaze fixed on the cloth.
"I would give my life to bring him back. Taking another one won't do that." He turns his serpent-like head, looking at Sigurd now.
"His life is the only thing I can offer to you. Besides my own." My voice is barely audible as I try to breathe through the pain.
Hreidmar touches his giant forehead against mine. The green eyes close for a second while he speaks.
"I hid his body in the cave. We will take his head with us. Then I will leave. Take him to East."
I put both of my hands on my mouth, watching him bend down, gently licking his son's snout. Kissing him goodbye.
He lifts his long neck towards the sky, roaring. I hear Sigurd's scream of terror, as the giant green eyes fix on him. On the pendant on his choker. One of Fafni's teeth.
My hand moves before I even realize it, ripping it off his neck. The blade in my other hand raises.
"No." Hreidmar stops me.
"He does not deserve to live. A coward. Drowned Atle. Killed your son. There's no telling what he will do if I let him live."
"Atle is fine. I pulled him out of the stream."
I blink away my tears, surprised.
"You saved him? After what Sigurd did?"
Hreidmar looks at me.
"Atle never done anything to me. Or you. Or Swan, for that matter. Atle told me she needs my help."
He looks at Sigurd.
"Put him to sleep. I will decide what to do with him after we're done."
I evoke the ring of blue fire around the tree, to protect Sigurd, but leave him awake.
Hreidmar looks at me, asking.
"He should think about what will come. Fear it." My voice is unusually cruel.
"Don't let him change you." Hreidmar spreads his wings, ready to take flight.
I sigh, pick up Fafni's head. Hugging it to my chest. Not letting Sigurd change me will be a challenge. I'm not sure I'm up to it.
