Part 25: Then sought the Gods their assembly-seats

I look after the Ravens. Hugin flies right towards the setting Sun. Munin circles overhead a few times, then follows.
Hreidmar touches his scaly forehead to mine.
"The cogs are turning. Now, we are to visit the cave."
"Can we leave Atle here? To hold wake over Fafni."
His golden-green eyes close for a moment.
"You are afraid he would get hurt?"
I nod. Look into his eyes.
"Seeing Bryn might be too much for him. You don't know Atle as I do. His heart is softer than almost anyone's I have ever met."
"I know, child. Nothing happens in these Mountains without a word sent to me. Atle is revered by the little beasts for his gentle spirit."
I smile.
"He is a lousy hunter."
Hreidmar winks.
"Worse than that. He use to go around, freeing rabbits and birds. Destroying traps. Cutting nooses."
"I didn't know that. But I am not surprised."
"He will be a good king."
"Atle? He has an older brother. He won't be king. Not if Buda sires sons."
Hreidmar winks again.
"Trust me on this one, child."
"Mon-tey." I bow. He gently catches me in his massive jaw, flings me on his back, and we are off.
Flying on the back of a dragon is a novel experience. The wind is searing cold, the air is too thin. I hold on for dear life. Not easy, Hreidmar's scales are hard and sharp, fitting perfectly to each other. His hide is slippery, my fingers can't find anything to hold onto. I can only squeeze him with my thighs, hoping for a smooth ride. Luckily, it only takes minutes until we land, just outside the cave. The silence is menacing.
" You will wait here, child." Hreidmar tastes the air with his forked tongue.
He disappears in Fafni's cave before I could protest. The reckoning will happen without me.

I look around after dry wood. Build a fire. Sit down, waiting. The hours pass. Only ashes and embers left when Hreidmar finally comes back, carrying Sigurds limp body between his fangs. I look at Sigurd, feel the hatred well up in me. The urge to hurt him is overwhelming. He is almost completely naked, looks like the clothes were burned off him. He still wears my ring on his shaft. I slip it off. He sighs, but doesn't regain consciousness.
"He will sleep until I revoke the enchantment."
"And Bryn?" Her name leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I feel the tinge of my own curse, like a flame burning my heart. One way or another, I will be the one to bring her down.
"Entombed. Asleep. Only Gunnar can wake her up. She is guarded by my flame."
Hreidmar lifts his snout towards the Sun. Tastes the air.
"The Ravens arrived. I feel the wrath of Odin, his curse on Bryn. Ah, yes. Here it comes."
The wind picks up, I can smell the thunder before it comes down and hits the opening of the cave. It erupts in green flames. They rise higher as I go closer, engulfing the mouth of the cave.
"Only the bravest warrior can wake her now, to take her hand in marriage."
"Well, that rules him out." I can't stop myself from kicking Sigurd on the shin, as he lies at my feet.
Hreidmar mumbles something under his breath, I can't make out the words. Sigurd wakes up with a twitch. I draw forth my blade, ready to do some damage. See his eyes fill with terror at the sight of us.
"Let's go find Swanhild." Hreidmar's body keeps me away from Sigurd. He knows how badly I ache to see his blood. He picks me up between his sharp fangs, carefully, so his tongue won't touch me. Puts me on his back, and we are airborne again.
He knows where to land without me telling him.

"You know the routine, child. You build a fire, I do some magic."
I bow my head. Hreidmar touches his forehead to mine. His golden green eyes glitter as he looks at me. His gaze goes deep, as if he tries to look into my heart. See me as I am.
"Mist. My daughter, from now on. I give you Fafni's birthright." His forehead heats up as it touches mine, radiates warmth into me.
I feel a blinding, searing pain in my head, fall to my knees, cry out. Have to close my eyes. As if the Mountain itself landed on my skull. I feel the blood surging in my brain. When I can finally open my eyes, I feel confused. I see runes. Runes everywhere. On the wings of the butterflies. On the crevices of the rocks, the lines of the leaves, the patterns of petals. On the birds that fly by, on the lizards scurrying around, on everything that's alive. Runes on every scale of Hreidmar. On my own hand. All of them talking to me. A million voices in harmony. A choir.
"Out of many, we are one. Entwining, converging. We are life itself."
I see with Fafni's eyes.
