Part 44: For so in the glance of thine eyes I see
| Nightwish rears up without warning, I fall backwards. Darkness takes hold of me. I see the stars when I come to my senses. Silence and the sickening sweet scent of blood envelopes everything. I’m alone. I try to get up, it’s not easy. The world is spinning. I close my eyes. “Is she dead?” I recognize the voice of Munin, she circles above me. “Allfather needs to know.” Woosh of wings, somebody touches ground beside me. Hands on my face, taking off my helmet. “Alvit?” I try to speak, but there is no sound. “Get away with you, filthy vultures! Don’t you dare touch her.” “Fetch Hreidmar, Sister. I will guard her.” I am not sure who’s talking. Sounds are far away. I hear the sea. “Mother?” Pin, slithering out of the waters, her scales are luminous, rainbows dancing across them as she moves. I don’t know if I’m still alive. Am I dreaming? Suddenly I hear a roar. Hreidmar. “Mist?” Sky’s voice, trembling. I open my eyes, this time for real. He is sitting at my feet, looking up at Hreidmar. “You can heal her?” “She is fine.” Hreidmar touches his forehead to mine. “Father.” My voice is weak. “Rest, my daughter. All is well. Atle got away safe. You saved him.” “The Sisters?” “All safe.” “I ... I saw Krimhild go down.” “Hyndla got her. Don’t worry.” “I can’t move.” “You are fine. Rest a bit. Let me do some chanting. Sky, you may stay.” “Thank you, Sire.” I close my eyes. |
