Mist

Part 46: Wild dreams, methinks are thine when thou sayest my lover is with me

“Hreidmar.” I wonder if he can still hear my thoughts.
No idea where I am, how long it has been since Sigurd attacked Sky. No idea if Sky survived. No idea what happened to Hyndla. The last thing I remember is Sigurd’s fist. Then my world exploded in a firework of pain.
I try to move, but can’t. Restrained by ropes. The darkness is impenetrable. Suddenly I feel a hand on me. My stomach lurches.
I think I’m blind.
“How could you give me away?” Sigurd’s voice.
“I can’t see. Is that you, Sigurd?”
His hand on my face. The touch is gentle, brushing my hair out of my eyes.
“Better?”
“I’m blind.” My voice is surprisingly calm.
I hear him whimper. His lips on my face, my eyes, my hair. His hands tremble as he unties the ropes. I try to move, to get up. Give up after a while. I feel his arms around me, pulling me into his lap, cradling me, rocking me back and forth.
“Mist. Please, Mist. Please, my love.”
I think of Sky uttering the very same words, not so long ago.
Sigurd keeps kissing my face, I feel his tears.
“I do whatever you want.”
I close my eyes, open them again. No change.
“Where are we?”
“In the dragon cave.” I feel his heart beat faster. The memory of his kill, maybe. I bite my bottom lip to stop myself crying. He brought me to Fafni’s cave.
“A good place to die.” My voice is dispassionate, revealing nothing.
“No. Please, don’t say that.” I feel him shake as he holds me, covers me with kisses.
“I need a Sister to release me.”
“No. I will not let you go. I will heal you.”
“You can keep me alive to suffer. Or let me go in peace.”
“Daughter.” Hreidmar’s voice in my head, clear as a crystal.
“In Fafni’s cave.” I hope Hreidmar heard me.
“Would dragon magic heal you?” Sigurd’s voice, silent.
“I don’t know.”
“I will find him. Ask him to heal you.”
“He will not let you live.”
“I know.” His mouth is cold as he kisses my lips, cradling my face between the palm of his hands.
“I wish I wouldn’t love you. You are my curse.”
I feel him move, putting me down to the ground, covering me in something soft.
“I’ll be back soon. I promise.”
He kisses me goodbye, I hear the echo of his steps. Then only silence.
