Part 47: On the way of the slain

Bright light penetrating the darkness.
“I’m here for you.”
“Came to release me, Allfather?”
“No, Menace. It is not your time.”
“It feels like it.”
Odin chuckles. Touches me softly on the center of my forehead. My eyes open. I can see again. See him smile.
“Sit up, Maiden. You are fine.”
I do as I’m told. Grit my teeth. The pain subsides fast. Odin sits down beside me.
“Thank you for saving Atle.”
“Why is he important to you, Allfather?”
“Great deeds ahead of him. A great life. Not long, but great.”
I sigh. Odin looks at me, adjusts his eye patch.
“You are thinking about Sigurd?”
“Yes. And Sky, my property. And Hyndla. I have to go find them.”
“They are with Eir. So is Nightwish.”
“You know his name?”
Odin looks amused.
“Do you know where Hreidmar is?”
“On his way back from your mother.” Suddenly he looks at me with surprise in his eyes.
“You are afraid he might kill Sigurd.”
“Yes. I know it’s not more than he deserves. Rotten to the core. But he claims to love me. Said I was a curse upon him. And maybe I am.”
“Love is never a curse, Menace. But it can be a blessing in a very deceptive disguise.” Odin stands up.
“Come with me now. You need to meet the one you killed. Grant him a place at the heroes’ table.
“I thought Krimhild would do that.” I stand up. Turn.
He stands behind me. The buzz of Valhalla around us.
“Maiden.” He kneels down, lowers his head. I touch his shoulder. He raises his head, gasps.
“Mist?”
“King Buda. Welcome to Valhalla. Take your place among the heroes at Allfather’s table. You earned it.”
“Was that you who killed me?”
“I saw you pointing your arrow at Atle. I chose him to remain alive. I claimed you for Odin.”
“You killed me and made my brother king over my tribe.”
“It’s his tribe now.”
“You don’t know what you did.”
I look at him.
“I saved you, Buda. Stopped you from killing your brother. Granted a place for you in Valhalla.”
“His death would have given us peace. You are responsible for all who will die in this war.”
“There will be no war. I will see to it.”
“How?”
“I know the one who is really responsible for Bryn’s death. I make sure king Gunnar knows as well.”
