Part 51: If the Fates their favor will give
| “No need to bring in the trash.” Reginleif smiles while she unsheathes her dagger. I sigh. “Wise one. Please don’t kill him yet. Gunnar needs to talk to him.” “What would he hear but lies from this... this heap of garbage?” Sigurd opens his mouth, and I kick him in the stomach. No need to aggravate the situation. Reginleif bends down, moves like lightning. One hand grabs hold of Sigurd’s hair. A flash of metal, and his plait is chopped off. He gasps. “At least now you look like a man.” Reginleif picks up the plait, tucks it into her belt. Leaves without saying anything else. I hear the faint rustle of branches. Atle. “Brother.” I can’t hide my tears. He just looks at me. The sadness in his eyes breaks my heart. “Mist.” “Can we go somewhere to talk?” I wish I had the courage to embrace him. “Of course.” I close my eyes, whisper a word. Darkness envelopes us for a moment. “You brought us to Fafni’s cave.” “We can stash Sigurd here. Don’t worry, he will sleep. Can’t hear a word.” Atle sits down, looks at me. Almost as tall sitting as I am standing up. “Buda. How is he taking death?” “I granted him a seat at Odin’s table.” Atle nods. “And Budle? Did he meet his daughter?” “I don’t know, haven’t seen him after the battle. I don’t even know who killed him.” “I did.” “Then you can claim his fortune.” Atle shrugs. “Offered it to Gunnar, if he signs the peace treaty.” “And?” “He said he would do it anyway.” “Twenty years, as usual?” “Yes. Twenty years of peace between the Goth and the Hunni.” I hug him. He puts his head on my shoulder. “I am so sorry, Brother.” “For Buda?” “Yes. And Krimhild. And for going behind your back. Keeping Sigurd alive.” “Why did you do that?” “Bryn wanted to keep him alive. And I’m not done with my revenge yet.” Atle looks at me, eyes shining in the dark. “Something tells me he would be better off dead.” “He would. Because he will have to stay here. He wanted what Fafni had. Now he can have his gold, but can’t use it. Can’t escape. He will be waiting for death, from Gunnar’s hands. Or Krimhild.” “You will shield him with blue fire?” “And now he won’t have Bryn’s armor. He will be trapped.” Atle stands up, hugs me again. “I hope I never piss you off.” “I would have died for you, Brother.” “I’m glad you didn’t have to, Mist.” “I go by Menace nowadays.” He looks at me, shakes his head. “Don’t let Odin change you. You are Mist. If you choose to be.” “When Sigurd dies. Then I will be Mist again. Until then, I am Menace.” “Will you take me back then?” I look up, startled. Sky emerges from the darkness. Behind him, Hreidmar. Aw fuck. |
